Experiences at the 50th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) , Switzerland

The World Economic Forum (WEF) is an NGO founded in 1971, Headquartered at Geneva, Switzerland. The WEF's mission is cited as "committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic, and other leaders of society to shape global, regional, and industry agendas”.

Every year, the WEF’s congress selects 6-8 topics from current global affairs for the annual event at Davos and based on that they invite participants for the event. Sustainability, Recycling & Circular Economy were some of the key topics for Davos 2020

Circular economy is an economic system with goal of eliminating waste from the system and use ways to convert waste into resources. Circular economy is extremely important for sustainable development of the world.

As an organization Gemini Corporation NV, which I belong is the one of the largest contributor to circular economy in the world & have 30+ years of rich experience in trading recyclables. Hence our the top leadership team was invited for the 50th annual meeting of WEF at Davos, Switzerland.

One of the topics for the event was “Sustainable Cars”. A car is majorly built using Steel, Plastic and Rubber. As a company we also facilitate in the recycling of 50 million Tyres per annum and I, being the head of Tyre Recycling business, was also invited for this coveted and hyper expensive event.

It was my first visit to Davos. I got the chance to meet and interact with high profile people like global CEOs of Coca Cola, Pepsi, Nestle, Walmart (altogether controlling economy of almost 10 trillion US$). I was also lucky enough to intract with influential personalities like the King of Belgium, Prime Minister of Belgium, Minister of Environment of France, Governor of Sau Paulo (Brazil), Chief Minister of Karnataka (India), Finance Minister of Costa Rica, Spiritual Gurus like Sadhguru to name a few.

To prepare for the meeting, apart from our inhouse R&D team, I used TopLink (a networking tool provided by WEF to its members), LinkedIn, Twitter, Google Search, etc. Here you get to know most of the things about the participants and even can set up meeting thru this tool.

As a company we did 100+ meetings in these four days (January 21-24, 2020) of the event and my learnings from the big event are:

          • Subject knowledge is very important, if you know the subject well, then even most influential or highest level peorson will listen to you.
          • Preparation is the key as you get very short time to present & impress so chose the topics diligently.
          • Time is very expensive and scarce in any important event like this, so advance preparation is extremely important to get best use out of it.

Despite being a resident of a small town Jodhpur with limited resources I could lead the Tyre Recycling Business to become the largest End of Life Tyre Trader in the world and further could reach the biggest global economic platform – the World Economic Forum with my strong will power, hardwork and guidance of my mentors.
